Living Indefinitely Long

There's an article on prospects for life extension, and Boomer desires for it, in yesterday's Orange County Register.

[Update a few minutes later]

And here's a related story via Instantman--an interview with Ray Kurzweil.

Nanotech has got to be the best religion in centuries! Immortality and all the cheap stuff you can possibly consume. All the really bad stuff goes away once you hit the "Singularity". And if "It" doesn't happen in your lifetime, we'll freeze you and wake you in time for the big party!

Perhaps, the life extension people should take a hint from the space exploration mess of the past few decades. A lot of impressive people (and government agencies) made claims that never panned out. Instead, we have an industry that has wasted opportunity for a long time. These people talk big, but will they deliver? I'm not saying that indefinite life is impossible, but be sure to pick choices that actually pay off.

Space hasn't delivered because the government's been in charge from day one.

Nanotech is a much more diverse and vibrant field, with both public and private funding to satisfy real wants and desires.

Nanites running around my innards keeping me alive indefinitely? I get itchy about organic bugs on my outsides!

I was watching them meteors Sunday night. One landed near my house. My dog ran out to check it out and he was abducted by them meteor aliens.

If you figure in the speed of them meteors, will my dog be younger when they bring him back in about 30 years?

Will I be in danger of any of them meteor alien diseases or will science have a cure by then?
