Columbia Haiku Contest

Here's my first entry to kick it off:

Futility

Fire in the sky
No warning or procedure
Heroes gone to rest

I'll post the best in a couple days as they trickle in.

COLUMBIA

Like snow, on green pines
Floating, flying to heaven:
Seven falling stars

Posted by B-chan at February 2, 2003 08:23 PM

Thanks, Bruce. Forgot I need a title.

Posted by Rand Simberg at February 2, 2003 08:30 PM

A comet blazes
Funeral pyre of heroes
Eternal glory

Posted by Mark R. Whittington at February 2, 2003 09:18 PM

Give us a title, Mark. I know, it's tough, because Bruce and I took the easy ones. But then, it's OK to repeat.

Posted by Rand Simberg at February 2, 2003 09:26 PM

OK Rand,

Morning Star

TOUCHED

Surly bonds slipped
The face of G-d, touched
This time on descent

Posted by Michael Bernstein at February 3, 2003 05:41 AM

Home

Sixteen minutes to home
So close yet so far away
Farwell good friends

Posted by Rex Graves at February 3, 2003 08:02 AM

More fitting this way:

TOUCHED

The face of G-d, touched
Surly bonds slipped
This time on descent

Posted by Michael at February 3, 2003 08:10 AM

Always

I sat again struck
By the strength of our heroes
In orbit always

Posted by Steve at February 3, 2003 08:25 AM

Astronauts' Gravestones

Bright star by daylight
The only real marker of
Our heroes' passing.

-- THE ENEMY --

Seven of our best,
Lives reaped by deadly friction,
Sworn foe of all life.

A sketch on paper
In the sky, burnt to ashes
of inspiration

EULOGY

Seven more perish,
Never to be forgotten,
And still the dream lives.
