Howard Lovy says those damned technologists are scaring the children again. This latest schtick of his reminds me of an old Bob Newhart routine.

Despite Smalley's idiotic comment about scaring the children, I think he has valid points about the difficulty of building a universal molecular assembler. Some people seem fanatical about molecular nanotech to the point where they automatically reject it's critics as being anti-visionary. Sure, maybe Smalley will go down in history in the same way the naysayers of the airplane did, but then again, maybe he'll be vindicated in the same way the critics of perpetual motion machines are.

There's always plenty of room in History's "Gallery of Fools Who Said It Couldn't Be Done" and we'll be sure to save a plaque for Smalley.

The fact that Smalley's ALIVE should be enough to convince him that nanoscale manufacturing is possible, but no, he chooses to cite ridiculous examples like enzymes not functioning out of wet environments when that was proven wrong about 2 decades ago. He's just a pathetic dinosaur, trundle him off to the old folk's home.
